Voice AI in tourism: Why DMOs need every channel

Voice AI in tourism: Why DMOs need every channel

11 pm at Lake Garda. A guest from Japan is standing in front of the tourist information center looking for the nearest pharmacy. The info desk closed long ago. Guest service ends at 6 pm. What remains is the website, but it is in Italian and German, not Japanese.

This is not an isolated case. Tourism organizations serve guests from 30+ countries, across all time zones, around the clock during peak season. 56% of leisure travelers have used AI for at least one trip (Phocuswright, March 2026; US market, European trend similar). 51% also use AI on-site for recommendations, and 95% of them rate it as helpful (Phocuswright, March 2026). Guests are ready. The question is whether the DMO is ready.

Voice AI is one part of the answer. But Voice AI alone is not enough in tourism. This article explains why DMOs need Voice AI plus chat plus hybrid search from a single knowledge base.

1. Why DMOs need Voice AI today

Tourism has three pain points that Voice AI solves directly.

Absorbing seasonal peaks. During peak season, the phones are ringing off the hook. A tourist information center has ten employees, but 200 calls per day. During the off-season, employees are standing around. Voice AI scales with call volume without having to hire or lay off staff. Call peaks caused by weather events, disruptions, or campaigns are absorbed by the AI without anyone working overtime.

24/7 availability. Guests plan trips in the evening, on weekends, from other time zones. 70% of travelers would skip the front desk at hotel check-in. Among Gen Z, it is even 82% (Mews Survey, June 2025). Guests want information immediately, not between 9 am and 6 pm. Voice AI answers calls at 3 am just as it does at 3 pm, in the guest's language.

Multilingualism. A DMO serves guests from Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Japan, and the US. The website is often in three or four languages. The phone line in one. Voice AI speaks 25+ languages, anchored in the destination's data. A Japanese guest asks about the pharmacy in Japanese, the AI responds in Japanese, with the region's data. This is not a translation layer. This is native language understanding.

Voice AI is not a nice-to-have in tourism. It is the answer to three pain points that every DMO knows.

2. Why Voice AI alone is not enough

A DMO that implements only Voice AI is running an island on the phone. Guests come through different channels, depending on the situation.

One person calls because they are behind the wheel and quickly need the opening hours. Another chats because they are preparing their hotel search on their laptop on the side. A third uses search because they know what they are looking for. A fourth needs the Advisor because they do not know what they need and want a recommendation. A DMO that only covers the phone reaches only the first. The other three get nothing.

On top of that: if the phone and website run separately, the Voice AI on the phone knows different information than the chat on the website. A guest asks about opening hours on the phone and gets a different answer than on the website because both systems draw from different sources. Every change to the knowledge base has to be made twice. The double maintenance process costs time and leads to inconsistent answers.

The solution is to feed all channels from a single knowledge base. You maintain your content once: website texts, event calendars, product data, PDFs, external databases. This knowledge base then applies to every module: the chat on the website, hybrid search, the Advisor, the Navigator, the Forms, and the Voice Agent on the phone. If you update an FAQ entry, it is immediately available on the phone and on the website.

That is the difference between "implementing Voice AI" and "serving guests across channels." Anyone who wants to say more about this should read the article "Why isolated Voice AI is not enough."

3. What DMOs need to watch out for during implementation

Five points determine whether Voice AI in tourism succeeds or fails.

DMS integration. A DMO uses a Destination Management System: destination.one, feratel Deskline, Outdooractive. The Voice AI must connect to this DMS, otherwise it will not know the event data, opening hours, and tours. Providers without DMS integration deliver answers that miss reality. Before choosing, check whether the Voice AI provider supports your DMS.

Data quality. A Voice AI is only as good as the data it accesses. Outdated brochures, maintained PDFs that no one updates, seasonally changed opening hours that were not updated. Before you implement Voice AI, clean up your data base. That is not an AI task. That is a content task that the AI makes visible.

Language quality. Supporting 25+ languages means nothing if the quality is poor in the languages your guests speak. A DMO at Lake Garda needs Italian, German, English, Dutch, Polish. A DMO in Bavaria needs German, English, Italian, French, Arabic. Do not check the number of languages, but the quality in the languages your guests actually speak.

Compliance. DMOs are often public-sector clients. GDPR, EU AI Act, BFSG are not a nice-to-have, but a basic prerequisite for procurement. US hosting is a procurement blocker. As of August 2026, the transparency rule of the EU AI Act applies: guests must know that they are talking to an AI. As of December 2027, the high-risk system obligations apply, postponed by the "AI omnibus" agreement of May 2026. Anyone implementing Voice AI should choose a provider that can prove this.

Seasonal operations. A DMO has different call volume during peak season than during the off-season. The pricing model must scale without tipping into off-season costs with every call peak. Check what a call costs on average, what happens during call peaks, and what an additional language costs.

4. The right Voice AI partner depending on the use case

branchly does not offer its own Voice AI. branchly is the central knowledge base and the dashboard that connects Voice AI solutions with the website AI. Which Voice AI solution fits depends on the use case.

For a DMO that wants to connect a destination.one DMS and needs to answer guest inquiries in 25+ languages, you need a Voice AI provider with direct DMS access. For an SME in tourism that must not miss calls and wants to be live in minutes, a volume player is enough. For a contact center with existing telephony infrastructure, you need a provider that integrates natively into these systems. For first contact on the phone with human escalation, a customer service provider fits.

branchly has the right partner for every use case. We would be happy to advise you on which one it is in a free, no-obligation conversation: branchly.io/termin-vereinbaren.

What all partners have in common: they can be connected natively in the branchly platform. The voice technology comes from the partner, the data base and the insights come from branchly. You maintain one knowledge base that applies to every module: chat on the website, hybrid search, Advisor, Navigator, Forms, and Voice Agent on the phone.

branchly is DMS-neutral. That means: branchly works on any Destination Management System, whether destination.one, feratel Deskline, or Outdooractive. You do not switch your DMS to get Voice AI. You extend your existing system with an AI layer that connects all channels.

That is the difference between "buying Voice AI" and "serving guests across channels." Anyone who runs a DMO is not running an island. They are running a platform that gets better with every interaction.

Summary

DMOs face specific challenges: seasonal peaks, guests from 30+ countries, inquiries around the clock. Voice AI is the answer to three pain points that every DMO knows: 24/7 availability, multilingualism, and scaling during call peaks.

Voice AI alone is not enough. Guests come through different channels: phone, chat, search, Advisor. Only those who cover all channels and feed them from a single knowledge base reach all guests. An island on the phone is not a solution. A platform that connects all channels is.

During implementation, DMOs need to watch out for five things: DMS integration, data quality, language quality in guest languages, compliance, and a scalable pricing model for seasonal operations.

branchly is the central knowledge base that connects Voice AI partners with the website AI. DMS-neutral, one data base for six modules, one dashboard, one compliance standard. The voice technology comes from the partner, the use case determines which partner fits.

Anyone in tourism today who covers only the phone loses guests. Anyone who runs all channels from a single source gains data that moves their destination forward.
